Charles Eames' intention was to create an alternative to the classic English club chair. The latter seemed too clunky and bulky to the designer - but Charles Eames did not want to do without the comfort that this armchair offered.
The result was the Vitra Lounge Chair, which breaks completely new ground in terms of appearance and comfort with its combination of plywood shells and leather upholstery. The Eames Lounge Chair makes it possible to maintain your posture even when sitting in a relaxed position.

What is the difference between Premium leather and Premium F leather?
Premium leather and Premium F leather are rather smooth cowhide leathers with a flat grain and a slight top sheen. The difference lies in the type of tanning. Premium F leather is the new and sustainable leather variant from Vitra, which is tanned on the basis of olive tree leaves. Both leathers are lightly pigmented.
Why is there a low and a high version of the Eames Lounge Chair?
Vitra offers the Eames Lounge Chair in two sizes - the classic dimensions and the new, larger dimensions. These were developed in consultation with the Eames Office in order to meet the requirements of today's people, who are on average around 10 cm taller worldwide. Which Eames Lounge Chair variant is the classic?
Charles and Ray Eames created a classic in 1956 with the Eames Lounge Chair, which is available in many versions today. The original version had a rosewood shell, black leather and black sides. The version with cherry wood is a visually similar but slightly cheaper version.
Where is the Eames Lounge Chair produced?
For more than 60 years, Vitra has been the only authorised manufacturer of the Eames Lounge Chair for Europe and the Middle East. Vitra only uses leather from cattle farms that are also used for food production. The tanning processes used in the manufacturing process fulfil all legal environmental requirements. With Premium F leather, Vitra also offers a sustainable leather that is tanned using olive tree leaves. And the veneer used for the formwork also comes from high-quality companies: with only two exceptions, Vitra only sources veneer with a sustainability certificate from European manufacturers.
