The Lounge Chair impresses with its extraordinary variety of materials and first-class workmanship in two available sizes. The characteristic wooden shells are made of moulded plywood, which is covered with high-quality wood veneers - made of classic Santos rosewood or European woods such as chestnut, cherry and walnut. The luxurious upholstery ranges from high-quality leather in various colours to the innovative Nubia fabric in eight sophisticated colour combinations. The polished or black powder-coated aluminium base and the recyclable V-Foam upholstery underline Vitra's commitment to sustainability and quality. The removable covers make it easy to clean or replace. The precise craftsmanship and well thought-out choice of materials guarantee exceptional durability and make each lounge chair a unique masterpiece.

Experience luxury in any size

The classic version of the Eames Lounge Chair is optimised for people up to 1.80 m tall, while the new XL version has been specially developed for people 1.80 m and taller. The difference lies in the dimensions and height of the chair, whereby the XL version offers an ergonomically adapted sitting position for taller people. Both versions retain the iconic style and timeless comfort of the Eames Lounge Chair, but can be customised to meet the needs of different user groups.

Veneer variants

Santos rosewood (from Bolivia, sustainability-certified): The vividly grained rosewood is still considered the "classic variant" today. Santos rosewood is a particularly strong and resistant wood. Thanks to its dark colouring and smooth surface, the wood has a particularly elegant appearance.

European walnut (natural): European black walnut with its calm grain differs from American walnut in its slightly lighter colour with more grey.

European walnut (dark): Wooden bowls in dark European walnut look restrained and elegant. Thanks to its even grain, walnut is the somewhat calmer alternative to the equally dark but more expressive rosewood.

European cherry: The wood of the European cherry has a golden yellow-reddish colour that darkens to a warm reddish brown over time. Thanks to its fine-pored texture and even grain, it has a calm and elegant appearance.

European chestnut (lacquered white): Chestnut wood shows large growth rings and its open grain looks warm and inviting. In the clear lacquered version, the wood is honey-coloured and darkens to a light golden-reddish-brown with age.

European chestnut (black lacquered): Even in the black lacquered version, the chestnut veneer retains its warm, natural appearance and is ideal for combinations with dark leather and fabric colours and with the black base frame.

Cover types

Natural F leather: Natural F leather is a very soft cowhide with a natural grain for a natural appearance. Natural F leather is open-pored, breathable and has a warm feel. It acquires a lively patina typical of leather with use. A tanning agent obtained from olive tree leaves (a waste product of the olive harvest) is used for its production, and the entire manufacturing process is carried out using as few and harmless chemicals as possible. This sustainable aniline leather is available in 4 colours.

Premium F leather: Premium F leather is a rather smooth cowhide with a flat grain pattern and a slight top grain sheen. It is dyed through and lightly pigmented. The olive tree leaf tanning agent is also used in the production of Premium F leather. This sustainable semi-aniline leather with its soft feel is available in 22 colours.

Nubia: Nubia is a blended fabric with an exceptionally lively, natural look. Its fine substructure is broken up by a voluminous bouclé yarn, which gives the fabric depth and a cosy feel. Depending on the combination, the yarns create a contrasting or calm interplay of colours with a Mediterranean flair. Nubia is available in 11 colours.

Calma: is an elegant upholstery fabric for use primarily in the living area. The blend of 60% mohair and 40% cotton offers a pleasant feel, natural look and long-lasting quality.

Base and feet

The base of the Eames Lounge Chair consists of a swivel 5-star base and a die-cast aluminium backrest bracket. The accompanying ottoman is equipped with a non-rotating 4-star base. The sides of the base frame can be ordered in black, black with polished edges or completely polished. Vitra recommends choosing the completely black or the polished base frame with black sides for the two darker woods. The completely polished frame goes particularly well with the lighter-coloured woods.

Glides

Please match the glides - optionally available in black or white - to your floor. Choose plastic glides for carpeted floors and felt glides for hard floors to protect the surface as much as possible.

Information on care, durability, guarantee and spare parts

To take optimum care of your lounge chair, we recommend cleaning the wooden surfaces with a soft damp cloth only. If necessary, use a mild cleaning agent. Please refer to the brochure supplied for cleaning the leather cover. Vitra offers a 24-month guarantee on the Eames Lounge Chair. However, thanks to the careful selection of materials and high-quality workmanship, the Vitra chair is a piece of furniture that is often passed down through generations. Traditional manufacturing and sustainability

The manufacturing standards of the Vitra Eames Lounge Chair have not changed since 1956: The original design by Charles & Ray Eames is still largely made by hand from three wooden shells - for the seat shell, backrest and headrest - assembled, upholstered and mounted on a swivelling five-star base. 47 work steps are necessary to make this design classic shine in all its splendour. When selecting the wood, Vitra attaches great importance to ensuring that all wood comes from sustainably managed forests. Vitra fulfils both the ISO 90001 quality management standard and the ISO 14001 environmental management standard and has been using wood from European cultivation alongside Santos rosewood since September 2025.

A great classic of furniture design

Designed by Charles & Ray Eames in 1956, the Vitra Eames Lounge Chair has become a true design classic thanks to its popularity. Immediately after its creation, the lounge chair was awarded the Triennale Prize in Milan. Charles Eames' intention was to create an alternative to the classic English club chair. The latter seemed too clunky and bulky to the designer - but Charles Eames did not want to do without the comfort that this armchair offered. The result was the Vitra Lounge Chair, which broke completely new ground in terms of appearance and comfort with its combination of plywood shells and leather upholstery. At the time the Eames Lounge Chair was created, the trend was towards organic and homely shapes and colours - Charles & Ray Eames were also inspired by this. The generous armchair conveys a cosiness that, coupled with timelessness and style, defines the image of the Eames Lounge Chair as a design classic. It is no coincidence that the Eames Lounge Chair has been part of the famous design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1960. The legendary lounge chair naturally has a place of honour in the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. Vitra's founding father, Willi Fehlbaum, discovered the Eames Lounge Chair in a shop window at the time and was so impressed that he immediately secured the licence to manufacture and sell the original design by Charles Eames. To this day, the original Eames Lounge Chair is only produced by Vitra.
