A true pioneer: Zig-Zag chair by Cassina
In 1934, the designer Gerrit Rietveld simply joined four angled surfaces in a rhythmic sequence to create a design object that is still highly recognisable today. The cantilever chair, originally made only of solid cherry wood panels with dovetail joints, was one of the first of its kind and continues to fascinate. Whether at the dining table or as a separate standing sculptural object - the Zig Zag chair attracts attention.
Design that defies time
Born in 1988, Dutch architect and designer Thomas Rietveld is one of the most important architects and designers of the De Stijl group. His iconic masterpieces include the red and blue chair and the Zig-Zag chair. First produced by the furniture factory G. A. Van de Groenekan in Amsterdam, the Italian furniture manufacturer Cassina S.p.A. has held the licence to manufacture the Zig-Zag chair since 1971. Models of this immortal cult object have been in the New York Museum of Modern Art and the German Vitra Design Museum since 1966.
Cassina - a traditional Italian company
Founded in 1927 by two brothers, Cassina was already doing pioneering work shortly afterwards: the close collaboration of architects and designers from different fields led to revolutionary innovations in terms of materials and design language.
