Happy Family: Wooden Dolls from Vitra
An extensive collection of human and animal figures made of wood - the Wooden Dolls from Vitra are so different in their appearance and yet they have a lot in common as a family: they are made of fir wood and are hand-painted!
Alexander Girard designed them in 1953 as decoration for his own house in Santa Fe. These originals can be found in the Vitra Design Museum and serve as a model for the new re-edition. The hand-painting process results in subtle variations that make each wooden figure unique and individual.
Alexander Girard
Alexander Girard is known as a formative figure in American design in the post-war period. The American was born in 1907. Girard originally studied architecture, but over the course of his career he worked as a furniture, graphic, exhibition and interior designer. Textile design was a focal point of his work. Abstract, geometric shapes and a variety of colour constellations are examples of his work.
