Inspired by the Chiavari Chair: Leggera Chair by Cassina
Gio Ponti was inspired by one of the most famous chairs in the world, the Chiavari chair, which Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi designed in 1807. But it was not only the designer who did a fabulous job on this international bestseller. It is thanks to masterful craftsmanship that the stability could be maintained despite the lighter, slender form. The result is a versatile piece of seating furniture with a clear design language that will set the right tone for any room.
Gio Ponti
Born in 1891, Ponti is one of the few Italian architects to have made an international name for himself both in the design of everyday objects and in the design of large-scale building projects.
After studying architecture, he headed the artistic department of the Richard-Ginori porcelain factory and has since been one of the co-founders of the Triennale in Monza. in 1927, he opened his first architectural office in Milan, where, together with Emilio Lancia, he also realised his residential building project "Casa Ponti" in Milan. He directed the art, architecture and design magazine Domus for many years. Later he took over the management of the V. Triennale in Milan and also taught at the Polytechnic there.
Cassina - a traditional Italian company
Founded in 1927 by two brothers, Cassina was already doing pioneering work shortly afterwards: the close cooperation of architects and designers from different fields led to revolutionary innovations in terms of materials and design language.
In the meantime, it is impossible to imagine the world of furniture design without the traditional company and always convinces with a balanced combination of high-quality, natural materials, manual craftsmanship and advanced production methods.
Material and format
The frame of the design chair is made of differently coloured ash wood or American walnut wood. For the seat, you can choose from woven rope, leather and fabric covers.
