Design House Stockholm was founded in 1992 by Anders Färdig. He previously worked for the Swedish design companies Boda Nova and Höganäs. The idea behind Design House Stockholm is to create exceptional products for well-known design brands. Interestingly, Design House Stockholm sees itself less as a manufacturer of high-quality furniture and home accessories and more as a publisher.
Design House Stockholm works with a constantly growing network of independent designers to develop its products. The innovative Swedish company aims to organise the relationship with its designers in a way that is otherwise more common for publishers and authors. The collections are therefore created on a decentralised basis by the various designers. The task of Design House Stockholm is to bring them together into a coherent collection.
The development of new products at Design House Stockholm has an unusual process: designers are not selected to create a previously defined product. Instead, independent designers are given the opportunity to present their own innovative ideas in a selection process and to assert themselves against other concepts. In this way, Design House Stockholm consistently pursues its goal of being the modern mirror of the best Scandinavian design with character.
Design House Stockholm 's motto states that nothing should be produced that is not both necessary and useful. However, if it is necessary and useful, one should not hesitate to make it beautiful. With this in mind, Design House Stockholm has created impressive designs such as the Block Lamp table lamp by designer Harri Koskinen, which is even in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
