Designer Marcel Breuer

From 1920 to 1924, Marcel Breuer completed an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker at the State Bauhaus in Weimar. There, he took over the management of the cabinetmaking workshop in 1925. What began as a private project quickly became part of the Bauhaus Dessau: his pioneering furniture designs made of tubular steel . Breuer left the Bauhaus in 1928 and sought closer ties with industry, including Thonet. He settled in Berlin as an architect , working primarily in interior design before spending several years with Thonet. This led to the creation of a comprehensive tubular steel collection in 1930/31 . Breuer left Germany via Budapest and London, finally arriving in the USA in 1937. During this time, he developed furniture made of plywood and aluminum. Through the mediation of Walter Gropius, Breuer became a lecturer and later even a professor of architecture at Harvard University in Cambridge . From 1941 onward, he and Gropius ran an architectural studio together. Breuer is considered one of the most central figures in the history of architecture and design .

Thonet – 200 years of tradition

The Frankenberg-based manufacturer stands for continuity and an unbridled drive for innovation . Thonet was the first manufacturer to bring bentwood furniture to market and to distribute tubular steel furniture. Michael Thonet founded his own workshop in Boppard on the Rhine in 1819. In the 1830s, he experimented with veneer strips boiled in glue and is therefore considered the inventor of "furniture made of bent wood." In 1842, he was invited to Vienna by the Austrian Chancellor, Prince Metternich, and the coffeehouse culture there laid the foundation for Thonet's later success. Given this drive for innovation, it is no surprise that Thonet also maintained connections to the Bauhaus and Marcel Breuer. Thonet implemented Breuer's experiments with cold-bent tubular steel and produced the well-known cantilever chairs.

The S 64 V  The cantilever chair consists of chrome-plated steel tubing, stained beechwood , and a woven cane seat and backrest with a plastic support fabric beneath the seat cane. It is 46 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 82 cm high. The seat height is 45 cm.
