Guide: Chairs
We sit at dinner in the kitchen, in front of the computer at work, at meetings in the meeting room, with friends in the restaurant, outside in the garden or balcony, with the children at the play table, in front of the TV in the living room. We sit, squat, loll, crouch, enthrone. Many people spend more than eight hours in a sitting position. For this reason there is a suitable chair for every occasion.
You can find out which seating furniture is best suited to which occasion, what is trendy and what you should look out for when buying a chair in our guide to chairs.
Step 1 - The place of use
Think about what you need the chair for. Should it be used as a seat for the dining room or the dining area in the kitchen, as an addition to the reading corner or for the living room, for the children's room, for meetings in the office or for outdoor use?
Step 2 - The shape and style
Depending on the use, you can choose between the upholstered chair with or without armrest, the four-legged chair or stool, in different styles from modern and stylish, to romantic and playful in country house style or classic and timeless in Bauhaus or Nordic style.
Step 3 - The material
Depending on use and personal taste, you can choose between different materials when buying a chair. The chair is available in wood, plastic or rattan, with or without upholstery, and these in different textiles. We recommend chairs made of plastic or wood for outdoor use. Sometimes it is the mix that does it, such as a steel frame and a wooden seat shell. For public areas, chairs without upholstery are preferable.
Step 4 - The colour
You can also determine the colour of a chair with almost all materials. With the choice of colour you can tastefully fit the seating furniture into the rest of your interior or add a highlight with your chair as a splash of colour. Please note the use of the chair: light-coloured upholstery is not advisable for heavy use.
Step 5 - The ergonomics
Make sure that the living area also offers movement and variety. Ideally, your chair is ergonomically shaped, has a slight backward inclination and supports the lumbar spine. Rocking backrests, swinging chairs, adjustable armrests and rolling chairs support the urge to move, even at the dining and living room table. The seat heights vary from 41 to 46 cm.
