Successful model: the S 43 FST tubular steel classic with armrests from Thonet

When the Dutchman Mart Stam designed his cantilever chair S 43, he certainly didn't realise how popular his chair would one day become. Thanks to its cubic frame made of bent tubular steel, the S 43 did not need any back legs and almost gave the impression of floating. Success was not long in coming: as early as 1933, the natural science reading room of the German National Library was equipped with the S 43.

The designer chair is currently more popular than ever. This is largely due to the manufacturer Thonet, which holds the artistic copyright and produces this classic with a passion for craftsmanship. The brand stands for the highest quality and precision. Refinements have turned the S 43 into a timeless piece of furniture. The slightly wider S 43 FST has armrests and can be used flexibly as a comfortable version: Perfect for modern living spaces, but also a real eye-catcher in public areas.

Ahead of his time - the Dutchman Mart Stam

Born in the Netherlands in 1899, Mart Stam initially worked for various architectural firms throughout Europe before being invited by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to the Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart-Weißenhof in 1927. He designed a terraced house, including the interior, for the Weissenhof Estate there. This marked the birth of the legendary tubular steel cantilever chair, which had no back legs at all. The iconic chair is still one of the absolute design classics today. Until his death in 1986, the Bauhaus lecturer was known as a busy architect who appreciated the functionalist, straightforward style and realised contemporary buildings.

Thonet - design furniture with a long tradition

Thonet from Frankenberg in northern Hesse is not only one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the world - the company has always had a keen sense for forward-looking ideas. As early as 1859, company founder Michael Thonet attempted to design a simple chair that could be industrially manufactured by bending beech wood. The result was the inimitable chair no. 14, also known as the Viennese coffee house chair. In the 1930s, Thonet was the main producer of the revolutionary Bauhaus tubular steel furniture, which was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer, among others. Today, Thonet is still authorised to manufacture these furniture classics. The company is currently working with many renowned designers from all over the world to expand its own collection.

Material and format

The S 43 FST cantilever chair from Thonet is 82 cm high, 56 cm wide and 52 cm deep. The seat height is 45 cm. It isstackable  and designed for indoor use only. The height of the armrests is 66 cm. The chair is available from the einrichten-design online shop with:
