Functional simplicity: side table B 9 b from Thonet 

The B 9 series of side tables from Thonet is characterised by its purist design and versatility. The small tables are perfect as coffee tables, side tables for seating groups, as special places for decorative objects or simply as practical storage units. They can be stylishly combined and pushed together after use to save space. 

Simple, effective design 

Inspired by the bentwood tradition, Marcel Breuer was already experimenting with bent tubular steel in the 1920s and 1930s. His first designs included the B 9 set tables, originally conceived for the canteen of the Bauhaus building in Dessau. In the meantime, the simple set table made of chrome-plated tubular steel and rectangular top has also become an absolute classic that cuts an elegant figure anywhere. 

Thonet - over 200 years of tradition 

The Frankenberg-based manufacturer stands for durability and the irrepressible urge to innovate. Thonet was the first manufacturer to bring bentwood furniture onto the market and to sell tubular steel furniture. Michael Thonet founded his own workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. In the 1830s, he experimented with veneer strips boiled in glue and is therefore regarded as the inventor of "bentwood furniture". in 1842, he was invited to Vienna by the Austrian State Chancellor Prince Metternich and the coffee house culture there laid the foundation for Thonet's later success. With this innovative spirit, it is not surprising that Thonet also cultivated links with the Bauhaus and Marcel Breuer. Thonet realised Breuer's experiments with cold-bent tubular steel and produced the famous cantilever chairs. 

Material and format 

The Thonet B 9 b is 52 cm wide, 39 cm deep and 50 cm high. 

The 20 mm thick MDF table top can be ordered in top coat (no wood structure is visible here), textured lacquer (here the structure shimmers through the colour) or stained beech in the Thonet colours - also with optiwhite glass top with diamond cut. The new ThonetDur® surface has also been available since 2014 - the high-quality 1.2 mm thick laminate panel has an extremely smooth appearance thanks to its silk-matt look and is also even more scratch-resistant than lacquered versions. The Pure Materials versions - solid oiled oak or solid oiled walnut - are also available (table top 3-layer solid wood, 21 mm). The frame of the Pure Materials is nickel-plated, while the other versions are made of chrome-plated tubular steel, optionally with a coloured lacquer finish.
