and describes the use as a rocking chair which comes with maple skids and connected via a steel frame to the seating shell.
The history of the Eames Plastic Chairs
Its first introduction had the new chair collection at the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. There the creation by Charles & Ray Eames reached 2nd place. In the meantime all Eames Plastic Chairs, including the RAR rocking chair have become real classic designer pieces.
In the 50s of the 20th century the idea behind the designer chairs was a true phenomenon: to this date no comparable designs existed which had a plastic shell made from one piece.
Charles & Ray Eames‘ motto "The most of the best to the greatest number of people for the least" - is perfectly adapted by the designers with the RAR rocking chair. Thus the Eames Plastic Rocking Chair is an affordable industrial produced chair with unique design which knows how to excite.
A revolutionary idea
The Eames Plastic Chairs have written history in the context of their creation. Since living space in the post-war period was short even in the USA the need for flexible furniture which could be used in many ways was great. The Plastic Chairs were the solution! With their unobstrusive yet unique design the designer chairs fit in every interior. Moreover RAR & co. brought a fresh breeze into the antiquated living style of the 50s.
From America to Europe
The journey of the Eames Plastic Rocking Chair RAR across the Atlantic started a few years after its introduction in the USA .
There all Eames Plastic Chairs were manufacturered by Herman Miller.
Since Erika and Willi Fehlbaum the founders of the renowned company Vitra liked the designs of Charles & Ray Eames very much they
started to negotiate for the sales rights right away.
The plan succeeded and Vitra received the exklusive sales rights for Europe and Asia. To this date Vitra is the only licensed manufacturer
to sell the Eames Plastic Chairs.
In the beginning the seating shell of the Vitra Eames Plastic Rocking Chairs was made from fibre glass reinforced with polyester resin. It allowed an extremley flexible formability - the disadvantages were the environmentally unfriendly characteristics of the material. For this reason the production of the Eames chairs was suspended for six years in 1993 until a solution was found for this problem. Since then Vitra uses recyclable polypropylen which is formable just as well and a lot more environmentally friendly.
The frame of the RAR is made of metal which you can order online in chrome or black powdercoated finish. For the skids Vitra choose maple stained either with a yellow tint or dark brown.
The RAR by Vitra offers a high seating comfort and ist very durable thanks to its sturdy frame – the rocking chair is tested up to 110 kg.
Rocking chair in action
In a design orientated home were comfort and cozyness is important the RAR rocking chair should not be missing. With its witty and unique design the chair sets highlights – also as an everyday furniture it convinces totally and its seating comfort is legendary.
Our recommendation: Sitting on the RAR will be even more comfortable with the seat cushions by Hey Sign which you can order online. It comes in many appealing colours. The felt creates an comfortable feeling and the anti-skid coating keeps the pad in place.
Who sets on a classy look takes the leather cover by Bent Hansen in black or cognac. You like it comfortable and cozy? Then you should choose one of the warming lambskin covers.
